Computers For Seniors Dummies
What would she need as a first time surfer – to use her Laptop?

I’ve purchased a Dell C640 – for an aunt that’s new to computers.. She wants to be able to surf the internet and send e-mails basically. Have also bought a mouse (as she mind find it easier) ; an 4x USB external port for printer etc; and a book for Seniors/ Dummies explaining all about computers.. I’m used to a desktop PC I intend to deliver it to her as a surprise. What else will she need to go online. She’ll need a server for Broadband obviously (I’ll shop around for the best deal to include telephone calls) but does she need a router – since the laptop is wireless ?
Another dummy here ! :-)
A server?
A router ?
The laptop isn’t wireless sorry – it’s Wifi ready.

You have a few misconceptions so lets try to clarify
The Dell C640 can come with or without wireless built in – wifi is the same thing, it depends on which model you purchased.
If you are sure it hasn’t wireless (or wifi if you want to call that) then you may want to get a Wireless/wifi adapter such as this to make it wireless

or this

These would plug into the PC Card slot on the side or into one of the USB ports. However wireless is not essential to connect to the internet – you can connect using a Wired cable see below.

A server is not necessary. She will need a broadband connection from one of the ISP (internet service providers) – who will supply as a minimum an ADSL modem with connects the computer at one end and the broadband connection at the other end. If she just wants a single wired connection then the cheapest way would be an ADSL USB modem which connects to the laptop via one of the USB ports. She would obviously have to have the laptop reasonably near to the USB modem.
If she wants a wireless connection then you have to have a combined ADSL wireless modem/router which again can be supplied by the ISP. This would still connect to the internet via a wired connection to the street (provided by the ISP) but would allow a wireless connection throughout the house.
It would probably be simpler to discuss her requirements with the ISP who will be able to provide all the bits and pieces needed to make everything work with the Dell

Hope this makes it clearer
