Why would a resistor value change when connected to an AC line?
For my senior project I am running 120VAC through a transformer to step down to 14 VAC. I am using a 10 Ohm power resistor for a load and a 1 Ohm power resistor as a shunt resistor to read from. My load measures out to 10 Ohms when not connected to the system but when I connect it to my ac line its measures out to 2 Ohms. The same thing happens if I connect a different load value and I cannot figure out why?
How are you making these measurements? I suspect that is the problem.
You can NOT use an ohmmeter on a resistor that has any voltage applied, It must be disconnected from the circuit first.
Because the only way the resistor can change value is if you overheat it, and you would see smoke in that case.
